There are so many things that I think people should understand, but simply don't. Have they never been exposed to them? Are they just that stupid? Would the world be a better place had these people been forced to learn about these things? Well, yes, I think so... but it's not like I have any control over any of that shit- but here are my thoughts anyways:
1) Work in a restaurant: preferably as a waiter/ waitress/ bartender/ cocktail server- this is THE best way to see how stupid, rude, and just plain weird people are. This will also give you a real appreciation for just how hard it is, so that hopefully you will not behave like a complete ass the next time you visit one.
2) Take some kind of music class: without music I might die- literally. And I truly believe that having taken several kinds of music classes growing up, that it encouraged my appreciation for music. Plus, I think people can either "hear the beat" or they don't. I can hear it- probably a little too much so. But I can dance my ass off- which I think is a bonus. I was also a drum majorette in the junior rose festival parade (how funny is that??!!), and taught aerobic classes later in life and made money doing it.
3) Take a basic psychology class: or at least read a book about it- for fuck's sake. Learn the basic theories for why people behave the way they do. Perhaps you'll gain a little insight- or not.
4) Anger Management- no, I have never been mandated by a higher court to take this class- and I certainly hope that it never gets to that point... but I know that I could certainly benefit from it, and so could a lot of other people- so just fucking make it free and available already. Makes sense to me!
5) Swimming- yes, I was forced to go to the evil lady that taught swimming classes up the street starting @ the age of three. I despised my parents for it at the time because that lady was MEAN!!!! She always made everyone cry and screamed at us as we stood shivering by the side of the pool while it was pouring down rain. But damn it if I didn't learn how to swim!!! I could tread water for days if I had to. Thank you Mom and Dad- you were right.
6)Table Manners- I honestly don't get it when I see someone chewing with their mouth open- or even worse yet, trying to carry on a conversation with food in their mouth!!! Who does that???!!! Even though my nieces are young, I cut them no slack when we sit down for Easter brunch or Christmas dinner. They may think I'm super bossy now, but they can thank me later.
7)Learn how to Type- My mother informed me one summer that I would be taking SOMETHING in summer school, and that this was not negotiatiable. I chose typing. Thank you Mom for making me go to summer school that year (yes, I just said that), and thank you universe or whoever for helping me choose that class. Knowing how to type is a very valuable skill and can save you shit-loads of time in the future.
I'm sure there are about 500 other things I'll think of, but I guess I'll leave it to just these seven for now. Thanks for listening!
